The Knoxville Area Urban League is hosting a three-session Homeownership Workshop on Jan. 15, 17 and 19, 2013, 1514 East Fifth Ave., Knoxville. The workshop, which is open to anyone preparing to purchase their first home, covers the details involved in selecting, purchasing, financing and maintaining a home and meets all requirements for FHA and THDA loans. The Knoxville Police Department will conduct a free child car seat checkpoint this Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at 917 E. Fifth Avenue.  According to the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA), 80 percent of all child restraints are used incorrectly.  During the KPD checkpoint, child car seats will be checked by a certified car seat technician.  The technicians will provide instructions and demonstrate the correct way to install your child’s car seat.
