Selecting the Medicare plan choice that’s right for you or your loved one is a complex matter, so you might be glad for information about how to make the best choice for your situation. These questions are common: Which is better–Original Medicare with a supplemental policy or an Advantage plan? Which Part D plan offers all your prescriptions in its formulary? If you aren’t taking prescriptions—or just one or two—do you need to enroll in a Part D plan?
If you or your loved one is in the age bracket to qualify for Medicare benefits, then you may be accumulating a large stack of mail promoting a wide variety of plan choices available to you. If so, you might like some assistance from some experts who aren’t trying to sell a particular plan.
“Understanding Medicare Plan Choices: Supplement, Advantage and Part D Prescription Plans” will be presented by the Blount County Public Library in cooperation with the Blount County Office on Aging. Presenters will be Don Walker, R.Ph., owner of Village Pharmacy, and David Holden, Manager, Affordable Medicine Options for Seniors at Knoxville-Knox County CAC Office on Aging.
They will make the same presentation at two different dates and times: Wednesday, November 28, at 11 a.m. at the library or Thursday, November 29, at 7 p.m. Seniors and their families are encouraged to attend.
For the second hour of the program, attenders are invited to ask questions of the presenters, or they can opt to have a session in the library’s computer lab to learn how to navigate the Medicare website atwww.medicare.gov to find information. Joani Shaver, Director of the Blount County Office on Aging will lead this computer session.
Walker and Holden will provide detailed information to help seniors sort through the plan options to determine the best choices for each individual.
Walker will discuss the options for the Medicare Part D prescription plan and will demonstrate how to navigate the www.Medicare.gov website to match an individual’s specific prescriptions with the plans available, costs, co-pays and other factors, including access at local pharmacies.
Holden will describe Medicare Supplement plans, their costs and how they interact with original Medicare to cover medical office visit and hospital costs not covered by Medicare A and B. He will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Advantage plans.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
