Talk of the Town

By: Martha Woodward

Do you ever ask yourself how it is that certain individuals get hired to work in schools with our most precious resource, our children?

Here are a few examples that will make your head spin.

A Norwegian school teacher put a new twist on show and tell by bringing a blood sample to class and letting students taste it. The teacher brought a vial of her blood from a doctor’s visit, and poured it on a plate for students to touch during “sharing time.” After touching the blood, the kids asked the teacher how to get it off,  so she put her finger in her mouth and licked.  The children followed suit by licking the blood off their fingers. (ewww)

The blood was sent in for HIV/AIDS and other testing, knowing that up to 12 children may have tasted the teacher’s blood. The teacher said sorry for the odd presentation, but the school fired her anyway.

A Cocke County school bus driver was found her inside of her school bus drunk.

Sheriff Armando Fontes said the officers got a tip around 2:30 p.m. in Newport that a bus driver who could be found behind the Newport Presbyterian Church off Hedrick Road had purchased a bottle of beer.

He said they were told that 39-year-old Cheryl Hembree, of the Parrottsville area, had just bought a 24-ounce bottle of beer and had taken the bottle inside of her school bus.

Detectives were dispatched to the scene. They found Hembree inside of her school bus with the engine running with an open bottle of beer.

She was given a breathalyzer test and was found to have a blood alcohol content of .09. It is illegal to operate a vehicle in Tennessee with BAC of .08 or higher.

After the breathalyzer was administered, Hembree was taken into custody and placed in the Cocke County Jail on a $5,000 bond and charged with DUI and violating the state’s Open Container Law.

In Ohio, when a 14-year-old special needs student told her father she was being bullied at school, he figured it was other students doing the bullying. Then he realized it was his daughter’s teachers doing the bullying.

After being told repeatedly by school administrators that his daughter was lying about it, he outfitted her with a hidden tape recorder under her clothes.

For the next four days, she recorded a series of abusive and cutting remarks from a teacher and a teacher’s aide at Miami Trace Middle School in Washington Courthouse, Ohio.

The two employees can be heard on tape calling Cheyanne “lazy” and “dumb.”

“Cheyanne, are you kidding me? Are you that damn dumb? You are that dumb?’’

One employee can be heard saying in one instance. “Oh my God. You are such a liar. You told me you don’t know. It’s no wonder you don’t have friends. No wonder nobody likes you because you lie and cheat.’’

On another occasion, the teacher can be heard poking fun at Cheyanne’s appearance.

“Cheyanne, don’t you want to do something to get rid of that belly? Well evidently you don’t because you don’t do anything at home. You sit at home and watch TV. All night. All weekend.’’

In this case, one teacher was fired and one was sent to training classes and allowed to keep her job.
