I have never been a very physical person, but I usually went at a fast pace until 2003 when surgeons performed four bypasses on my heart. I felt better but I did slow my pace.
Last month I began “Boot Camp” with Workout Anytime on Emory Road at Clinton Highway in Powell.
Three days a week, I join three others and a trainer to build my body back up to near its potential. So far, I have lost about 10 pounds and at least an inch off my waist. The most significant advantage is my energy level is improving. I find myself making a faster stride than a few weeks ago.
Owner John Heifner and trainer, Alex Stephens, recognize that an out-of-shape 61-year-old body cannot perform tasks a younger one can. They adjust the activity to compensate.
Fellow Boot Camper, Becky, said she started when Alex, her nephew, began a workout program at church. She had a desk job and hardly moved. She said she had lots of joint problems, especially her knees and feet. She had joined the gym but until she got laid-off in June, she didn’t take the time to work out. “I thought Workout Anytime boot camp would be a good way to get moving,”
After two months in Boot Camp, Becky says, “I love it. I feel so much better. My joints are not hurting and I have got stronger and more energetic.” She says she can keep up with her grandchildren better now. “Alex adapted the exercises for me so I don’t feel like a failure. I am able to do the things he has me do,” she added.
Becky said she enjoys Workout Anytime more than other gyms, “Here, you see all sorts of people, not just the skinny model or athletic types. The previous gym seemed to be more for body builders.”
